LISS FENWICK, b. Humpty Doo, Australia, 1989

Currently on Display at 834 MIBU. A selection of images taken from her book Humpty Doom

Spanning 20 years, Liss photographs the Larrakia Country on which their family lives, addressing the inevitable failures of settling stolen land on the continent now known as “Australia”.

‘I grew up in a rural district on the tropical fringe of the “northern territory”, Humpty Doo. Haunted by pictures I took as a teenager (some included in the book) I make photographs of the next generation of my family growing up in this place.’ – Liss Fenwick

Darkly humorous and intimate, with the surrounding savannah environment, Humpty Doom engages with what it means to represent what will always be Larrakia land.

Liss Fenwick is an artist using photography, video, sound and material processes. She works with visual languages to explore speculative outcomes of failing human-centeredness and eurocentrism.

She is from Larrakia Country in the Northern Territory, and works between Larrakia and Naarm.

“Just like there exists no flower that has no name, there are no nameless humans existing in reality.
If we consider those figures that our history books tell us about as protagonists, most human beings are reduced to mere supporting actors. However, needless to point out, a slight change of perspective will present them as subjects of their unique personal histories. While seemingly buried in the casualness of daily life, all of them carry their own individual power and toughness, concealed deep within.”
— Issei Suda (excerpt of a statement made during his lifetime.)
